He said that increasing the size of the International program would give the college the best return on its investment because the international students pay significantly higher tuition than resident students.
Lambert also pointed out that increasing the size of SCC’s online classes or “virtual college,” as he called it, would help increase the number of full-time enrollments (FTEs) which would help maintain some of the state support.
Several questions asked how the college could increase enrollment while cutting faculty and still provide a high quality of education.
Lambert said that SCC would be moving toward a model that served fewer FTEs – and more of them online – and that the college would need to determine what number of full-time faculty was the minimum needed to serve that number of students.
The positions to be cut ranged from at least one vice president to social science to business. Lambert pointed out that the number of administrators left after the cuts would be close to the minimum number needed to maintain accreditation. However, he did not say that there was a specific number for this.
Lambert said that, as these cuts continue coming down on SCC, “we have to start getting closer and closer to the classroom. Soon it’s going to become even more wholesale. It’s going to hit the classroom very hard.”

First of 33 trapped Chilean miners reaches surface

According to CNN.com, the first of the trapped miners, Florencio Avalos, has reached the surface after some 68 days trapped in the collapsed mine over 2,300 feet down. One of the greatest things he taught me, and many others who met him, was to be positive, perseverant and seize the day.

Norm did not give up, no matter what. If his articles needed work, he would always find ways to make improvements. When the other editors and I had feedback, he'd listen to our comments and work them into the story. However, Norm had a strong voice. If he didn't like the changes he would let us know.

Regardless of whether I asked him to change something or not, he would work on his article, and pretty soon come back with a joke in his back pocket and the news that he had emailed his work to me.

I also admired the patience and energy he brought with him not just to the Ebbtide but the Political Science and Journalism classes I took with him as well–even when he didn't have his electrical chair. And although he had a harder time moving around, he was there with a million ideas, and his beautiful smile.

And I can't stop thinking about the fact that he was 72 years old, but had more energy and drive than most of us, who were at least a quarter century younger.

Throughout my time at the Ebbtide, I heard Norm say over and over again that he wanted to have a pajamas party, but we never actually put one together. Now, I want to have a PJ day to celebrate his good humor, and many great contributions to the campus community.

I encourage all of you to wear your best PJs to school, this Friday May 28; and think about him. He was 72.
Known for his heartwarming and out-of-the-blue humor, Rogers was known all around campus. During his 17 years as an SCC student, Rogers participated in the student government as a senator, and wrote for the Ebbtide student newspaper where he contributed as an opinionated free thinker. Nevertheless, Rogers was always willing to strike up a conversation with anyone and do his fair share of listening and learning from others.
Rogers was also an active member of Worldly Philosophers and Dismal Scientists Society (WPDSS), as well as the College Council.
His wheelchair dependency did not seem to have any effect on his level of activity and independence. On an average day you could see Rogers going around campus by himself, getting his famous "mocha" for which SCC baristas will always remember him, talking to faculty, attending conferences, greeting students and meeting with his Ebbtide editors; always with a smile on his face, and a joke in his back pocket.
This man never stopped, and his energy will probably keep enlightening Shoreline for a long time. He will be missed, but his examples of dedication and passion for life set a precedent for all who knew him.
The Ebbtide invites you to share a story about him to be possibly included in a full feature obituary that will be published about him in the next issue.
Also, check the Ebbtide online (www.shoreline.edu/ebbtide) for a place to post your thoughts and stories about Rogers.

SLC makeover contingent on PUB fee increase.

Cam Keeble

Business Manager
In a recent student government meeting, the formal recommendation for a $58,915 "physical restructure" of the Student Leadership Center was approved, contingent upon the approval of an increase in the PUB fee.
Included will be upgrades for a large majority of the office furniture in the SLC as well as some new pieces for the Game Room. Existing SLC furniture will be relocated throughout the first two floors of the PUB for student study areas. A large oval sectional table will replace the area now filled with cubicles. The space is intended to allow for, as stated in the formal recommendation, "increased collaboration and transparency."
The cubicles and desktop computers currently installed will be moved down to the Game Room, states the recommendation, "creating a place where students can game, easing stress on Student and Academic Labs."
While a funding source for the restructure was not specifically identified, there are several budgets available that Advisor Jamie Ardena outlined as options. The decision to fund the restructure through contingency, rather than moving forward immediately, was made with respect to a comment Tonya Drake, vice president for student success, made from the gallery during the open meeting. The concern was that if the PUB fee increase doesn't pass, and the student government is forced to use funds from the SS&A fee to make up for it, a newly remodeled Student Leadership Center would seem excessive in financially tight times.
"It's not just that we want to buy things for ourselves, it's very clear that that's not what's happening,” said Prime Minister Jessica Gonzalez “But we're reaching a level of sophistication where our current systems are completely inadequate.” She also said that with the substantial amount required for student government salaries, the proposals are there to help "streamline that--to use student money more efficiently."

"I just wanted to make sure you were conscientious of how it might look to others," Drake said. Minister of Finance Pat Yiu said, "That's the only concern I have--it seems like a really good idea--but it's the possibility of the PUB fee not passing."
The financial purchasing deadline for the year was a factor in advocating for this sooner rather than later, Gonzalez said, and that delaying the funding until the PUB fee passed would mean leaving the project for next year's government to pick up. But in light of the upcoming vote on the PUB fee increase, and the potential chance, if slim, for that not to pass, student government voted to fund the recommendation with the stipulation in place that the PUB fee increase must be approved first.
Advisor Jamie Ardena congratulated the group on a "Big step... You're taking your leadership into the 21st century with technology and work stations that work for you."

April 11 fundraiser cancelled

Miles Liatos
Sports Editor

The April 11 athletic department fundraiser, which was scheduled to have Jim Lambright as its special guest, has been cancelled. The wine and cheese event didn't have enough people signed up in order to happen.
According to Doug Palmer, only seven people had signed up to join. Though, he said he thinks that if the event went ahead as planned, 25 or 30 people would have shown up.
The next fundraiser is planned for late May or early June, Palmer said. He also expressed much interest in allocating the funds received from the event to athletic scholarships.
This happens at a time when student government is encouraging fundraising by the athletic department, because they are not willing to match the amount of money the athletic department is asking for in the coming 2010-11 year.

Women's basketball coach resigns

Miles Liatos
Sports Editor

Alisa Scott has resigned as head coach of SCC women's basketball.
Scott coached for one season at SCC, posting a 3-21 record with a 2-14 division record. But if you want to shoot pool or just hang out and drink some coldies, this will handle your needs.

Set just off Highway 99, the bar looks relatively small from the outside–but is surprisingly large inside. Finster's sports booth, table, bar, or lounge seating in one of the three parts of the bar. Standing just inside the door, to the right is a partitioned area with a projector screen in addition to its own bar, and a couple smaller flat-screen TVs. In front of the bar there are booths and tables, and to the left are five pool tables and more table seating.

For the most part, Mick Finster's is a sports bar. Above the aforementioned projection screen and pool tables (first game free, then $0.75 per game after), there are ten more flat screens, and another projector and pull-down screen situated around the bar. Pull-tabs, a couple arcade-type games, and an Internet jukebox complete the sports bar feel. The only signs that it may be an Irish bar are a good selection of whiskey and an overall green color scheme.

Despite it's lack of Irish entice, Finster's serves a good selection of cold beer (16 on tap and 29 bottled), wine (three by the bottle and five by the glass), and food that is hitting home runs over most bar food.

Try the Buffalo chicken nuggets, or the chicken strips, and find tasty deep-fried happiness. From grinders to personal pizzas, have your appetite handy, as the portions run fairly large. The costs are pretty standard, expect $5–$10 menu items and $2–$3.50 beers. While they offer restaurant-style selection, don't expect restaurant-style service, 'cause Finster's will disappoint. The service is as good as any bar you might arrive in–the drinks will be fairly quick, but the food might take a second.

For those that choose to smoke, there is a patio out a side door where you may entertain your habit, and it doesn't seem to let the smoke back in so it won't disturb the non-smokers.

Overall, Mick's is a good spot with average service and little Irish flair–despite its name and colors; one that I have heard called a "dive bar," but is hardly a dive. A fine bar to spend an afternoon or evening racking up some pool games, or racking up a bar tab and grabbing some food while you're at it.
